Reading
We have a balanced literacy program in our classroom. The Scott Foresman program is used along with a readers’ workshop approach. We have weekly phonics and word study lessons. Every lesson starts with a skill or strategy focus lesson, students read independently, in pairs or in small groups with me. Read aloud is very important in our classroom!
Writing
Writing is taught through the Lucy Calkins Writers’ Workshop approach. We start with a focus lesson and students then write independently while the teacher conferences with students around the room. Students come back together at the end of the lesson to show what they have written. We will be having Writing Celebrations throughout the year where students will show off their writing to parents.
Math
We use the Everyday Math Program. Students explore multiple algorithms for addition and subtraction and use many types of manipulatives to investigate mathematical concepts such as time, money and geometry.
Social Studies
We study Native Americans, Biographies and Cultural Traditions from Around the World. We visit Drumlin Farm and the Harvard Museum of Natural History to enhance the units. Students also are introduced to research skills!
Science
We start off the year with a bang– Butterflies! We learn about the life cycle of a Painted Lady butterfly and raise them from small caterpillars! We then learn about different types of changes and then end the year learning about soils!
