Text Box: I. Why do second graders receive homework?
Students receive homework throughout the year to promote excellent study habits and organizational skills. Students need to become experts at planning and scheduling their own times to complete their assignments to the best of their ability. Also, homework reinforces daily lessons within the classroom each day, while fostering additional skills through practice or enrichment activities. Finally, homework lets students know that learning occurs while inside and outside of the classroom.
II. What is second grade homework?
In Room 18, homework will be assigned daily. Students should NOT spend more than 20 minutes per night on homework assignments. Note, this does not include daily reading time.
Second graders should read by themselves or with a family member for at least 15 minutes per night. Reading may include, but is not limited to: fiction, non-fiction, biographies, poetry, magazines, kid newspapers, or other parent deemed appropriate piece of literature. In the Spring, students will need to choose a chapter book that they will be doing a written response to. This means that reading must be done first!
Mathematics– These concepts are all previously taught in class and students have practiced them with guidance and on their own. You may need to review the concepts with your student. If there is ever a Family Note sent home, please read it! Many concepts taught thought our Everyday Math Program are taught differently then when we learned them.
III. How can you help at home?
• Make sure your child has a "regular" time each night to work on their assignments.
• Make sure your child has all the necessary assignments in their bags for the morning.
• Check your child's work with them to make sure it is completed appropriately.
